About the Douro River

The Douro River, spanning approximately 897 km (557 miles), is the third-longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. It originates in Spain’s Soria Province at the Picos de Urbión and flows westward through northern Portugal, eventually emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Porto.

The river’s course covers diverse terrains, from steep, terraced vineyards to deep valleys and dramatic gorges. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Douro Valley is renowned for its centuries-old winemaking traditions and picturesque landscapes.

The Douro River has played a vital role in the region’s history and economy, especially in the transportation of Port wine. The construction of the Douro Railway in the late 19th century facilitated trade between the Douro Valley and Porto. Additionally, a series of dams and locks built along the river has made it navigable for commercial and leisure purposes, enabling the flourishing of river cruises.

The region’s Mediterranean climate supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including olive groves, almond trees, and numerous grape varieties. The Douro Valley is home to over 100 grape varieties, with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca being the most prominent for Port wine production.
